Biography

Wadia Marraoui is a strategic Human Resources leader with over 16 years of experience spanning the United Nations system, humanitarian organisations, and the private sector.

She currently serves as Head of Human Resources at ��, where she leads strategic HR initiatives supporting organizational effectiveness, talent management, employee relations, and institutional development.

Prior to joining AUR, Wadia worked with the United Nations-World Food Programme (WFP), including assignments at WFP Headquarters in Rome as a Staff Relations Officer. In this role, she supported employee relations, policy interpretation, conflict resolution, workplace well-being initiatives, and organizational projects at the global level. Throughout her tenure with WFP, she also served as Head of HR Operations covering the Syria, Lebanon, Türkiye, and Jordan corridors, while acting as Project Coordinator for organizational alignment and restructuring initiatives. She provided strategic HR leadership for a large and geographically dispersed workforce operating in complex humanitarian environments, with responsibilities spanning HR operations, workforce planning, talent management, employee relations, organizational restructuring, and change management.

Before joining WFP, she spent several years with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), where she played a key role in supporting rapid organizational growth and workforce expansion across Syria. Earlier in her career, she held progressively senior HR positions in the telecommunications sector with Syriatel, leading large-scale recruitment, workforce planning, and talent acquisition initiatives.

Wadia holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Human Resources Management and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) as well as a Certified HR Manager (CPD, UK). Her expertise includes strategic HR management, organizational development, employee and staff relations, change management, workforce planning, talent acquisition, organizational restructuring, emergency response leadership, and HR operations in complex and multicultural environments. She is passionate about building resilient organizations, developing talent, and driving positive organizational change.

Biography

Manuela Pacella (Rome, 1977) is an art historian and critic. As a freelance curator, she focuses on cultural exchange between Italy and several countries in Central and Northern Europe. She is particularly knowledgeable about the art scene in Northern Ireland, where she has worked since 2011 and participated in the ICI Curatorial Intensive at the CCA in Derry and the International Residency at Flax Art Studios in Belfast (both in 2013). As guest curator, she organized the 2017 exhibition “Lost in Narration. Riccardo Giacconi, Invernomuto e Luca Trevisani” at the MAC in Belfast and led the second Curatorial Directions, which explored the importance of text, narrative, and storytelling in exhibition making through workshops and lectures in Belfast and Milan.

In 2015 and 2016, she was Editorial Researcher and Coordinator at NERO (Rome). She regularly writes for exhibition catalogues and books, as well as for art magazines and newspapers such as “Flash Art” (Italian and international editions), “Il Foglio Arte” (Milan), “NERO Editions” (Rome), and “The Visual Artists’ News Sheet” (Dublin). Her publications include Inner Homeland (NERO, 2012), Bertille Bak. La fiaba del reale (Postmedia Books, 2018), and Tell me stories! (Politi Seganfreddo edizioni, 2024), a book based on the column of the same name published in “Flash Art Italia” from 2020 to 2024. She recently started a new column, Cicala (Cigada), for the relaunched print edition of “Flash Art Italia,” presented at Artissima in Turin in 2025. Every two months, she portrays Rome and contemporary art in the city with a personal, derivative, and fragmented perspective and style.

She currently focuses on writing and publishing, working on online and print projects through her platform RUTH (ruth.onl), and teaches in Rome at the American University of Rome (BA in Art History), IED Design (BA in Interior and Product Design), and NABA (MA in Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies).

Biography

Dr d’Arcangeli is originally from Rome, where she worked in industry for a few years before leaving her last position (in the Cecchi Gori Group) to start her academic career at Strathclyde University and at the University of Glasgow, in Scotland. In 2008 Luciana moved to Australia, to work at Flinders University, in Adelaide, where she was Cassamarca Senior Lecturer, Director of Studies and finally Head of Italian, and now holds full academic status. Via the Flinders University Languages Outreach Program Dr d’Arcangeli was also Adjunct at the University of Adelaide, effectively teaching and managing a dual-university programme.

Luciana is a HE Academy Fellow (2001), and her teaching experience spans from Italian theatre, cinema, and culture to Italian language, interpreting and translation at all levels. Today Dr d’Arcangeli teaches at AUR and, being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and a Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (UK), she continues to work as language consultant, and translator.

Dr d'Arcangeli is the author of I personaggi femminili nel teatro di Dario Fo e Franca Rame (Firenze: Franco Cesati Editore, Strumenti di letteratura italiana, n.32, 2009, 336). Luciana has also published widely in journals, and edited several books and special journal issues on Italian cinema and theatre – many stemming from the international conferences she convened in the UK and in Australia. In 2023 Luciana published, with Claire Kennedy and Daniela Cavallaro,Staging Violence Against Women and Girls (Bloomsbury Methuen, London). This is the last outcome of the research project titled "Indelible (Eng)/Indelibile (It): The Representation of (In)visible Violence Against Women and their Resistance", funded by the Australasian Center for Italian Studies whose Inaugural Visual and Performance Studies Research Group was created by d’Arcangeli in 2018, and coordinated by her until the end of the project in 2021.

Currently d'Arcangeli is working on the translation into English of Franca Rame’s plays.

Among Dr d’Arcangeli’s awards are the Italia nel Mondo prize (2016) and the Gold Medal and Merit Award from the Dante Alighieri Society (2017), both in recognition of professional excellence in disseminating Italian culture as President of the Dante Alighieri Society of South Australia, and the Prize for Italian Literary Translation (2018) from the Melbourne Italian Institute of Culture.

Soulé Déesse

Biography

Déesse is an artist and educator whose work has been supported by national and international residencies, including the Bogliasco Foundation (Italy), Yaddo (NY), c.r.e.t.a. rome (Italy), the Hungarian Multicultural Center (Hungary), Cholamandal Artists Village (India), Can Serrat (Spain), and Baldwin for the Arts (NY). She has received several awards, such as Best of Show at the Migrations Film Festival (The Front, New Orleans) and the Yaddo Donald and Genie Rice Filmmaker Residency Grant. In 2025, she was nominated for the Anonymous Was A Woman award (pending). Her work has been featured in Art in America, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), and Boston Art Review.

She has exhibited her work—both solo and collaboratively—across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Recent exhibitions include the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (IN), Black Mountain College Museum & Art Center (NC), Printed Matter, Inc. (NY), Mahmoud Darwish Museum (Palestine), Bogotá Arte Contemporaneo Gallery (Colombia), Galerie Nord (Germany), Greatmore Studios (South Africa), Total Arts Gallery and the Cultural Foundation (UAE), the Katonah Museum of Art (NY), Gallery 263 (MA), and the B2 Center for Media, Arts & Performance at the Atlas Institute (CO).

Déesse comes to AUR from Tufts University’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA), where she serves as Professor of the Practice (Drawing & Painting) and Chair of Drawing and Painting. Her teaching and leadership experience, coupled with a globally recognized interdisciplinary approach, will advance AUR’s studio curriculum and the program’s Rome-based experiential model.

Déesse’s work - rooted in what she terms Afrobaroque and digital Vodunism (merging traditional and digital media, while drawing on Afrofuturism and the global Baroque) - moves across painting, drawing, site-specific installation, performance, experimental sound, digital printmaking, and film. Her practice examines human and post-human identities, the future of race and sexuality, and the affective power of images and objects.

At AUR, Déesse leads program development across drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and expanded media, strengthening pathways that connect studio coursework with Rome’s museums, contemporary art spaces, and artisan networks.

Angela Wheeler

Biography

Dr. Angela Wheeler joined AUR in 2025 as a lecturer in the Cultural Heritage graduate program. She has worked in and researched the cultural heritage sector since 2010, both in the United States and internationally, with a particular focus on (post-)socialist Eurasia. Professor Wheeler has surveyed mid-century public housing in Hawaii, documented Ottoman mosques in the Republic of Georgia, conserved archaeological artifacts at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and consulted with indigenous communities about the impact of fracking on Siberian landscapes - experiences she enjoys introducing to students to show them the breadth of professions within cultural heritage. Her research and teaching have focused on the cultural heritage of marginalized communities, preservation approaches to historic neighborhoods, and the role of states and international organizations in shaping heritage priorities.

Professor Wheeler has previously lectured at Johns Hopkins University, Amherst College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she developed and taught courses on historic preservation, urban studies, and architectural history. Her goal as an educator is to provide students with not only technical skills but the theoretical, historical, and ethical contexts they need to interrogate the value systems underlying cultural heritage practice. As a researcher, Dr. Wheeler’s work explores how diﬀerent regimes did (or did not) incorporate historic neighborhoods into urban plans, a process that often reﬂected whose homes, communities, and cultures were considered deserving of value.

Francesco Buscemi

Biography

Francesco Buscemi is an Adjunct Professor for the MA in Food Studies at �� (AUR). He has two national academic qualifications, the first in sociology of culture, and the second on media studies. He currently teaches media studies, media writing and scriptwriting at the Catholic University of Milan; Francesco also writes about food culture and the food system in the Italian newspaper Domani.

Francesco Buscemi from 2023 to 2024 he was a member of the research group Future Eating at the University of Turin, where he focused on the cultural impact of food technologies, specifically cultivated meat. His research is based on a constructivist framework, an inductive approach and analytical tools such as semiotic analysis, cultural history, storytelling and political economy. His teaching draws on learning by doing and game-based learning. His experience includes teaching at the University of Stirling, Bournemouth University and Insubria University, Como. He was a member of the Semiotic Society of America, where he also chaired various debates. Francesco has also been a script, comics and TV writer for about twenty years and has recently published a novel.

From 2015 to 2018, he co-founded and was a member of the research group Foodkom, at the University of Orebro, focusing on the mediatization of food and the meal. From 2016 to 2017, Francesco was also a postdoc researcher on food and the territory at IUAV University of Venice, where he interviewed and applied storytelling analysis to people working at different stages of the food system, to understand how food culture and food businesses can support new forms of sustainable tourism. In 2013 he was the recipient of the Santander Research Grant Fund for a study on how the Nazi propaganda represented meat and food in general to demonize its enemies, which he carried out at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.

Biography

Dr. Vassilissa Carangio holds a Ph.D. in Business, with a focus on Management and Organization Studies, from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. She has taught a broad range of business and liberal arts subjects at various institutions in Australia. She was a visiting research fellow at the University of Warwick in the UK and a Black Europe Summer School (BESS) alumna at the International Institute for Research and Education in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her doctoral research on the Australian job market was funded by the Swinburne Premier Research Award (Chancellor's Research Scholarship, CRS).

Dr. Carangio also holds an MA in Communications (combined BA/MA) from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, where she graduated summa cum laude and completed a Master’s thesis in political economy. As a strong advocate of lifelong learning, she is currently enrolled in the MITx MicroMasters program in Supply Chain Management, developed and delivered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Her research on race and gender inequalities in business and organizational settings has been cited in a UN Women policy brief and in the largest strategic study to date on women’s representation and gender equality policies across managerial space organizations, launched and published by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) as part of its Space4Women programme. Beyond academia, she has extensive experience working in multicultural and multinational environments internationally.

Her teaching philosophy is informed by a Gramscian perspective, emphasizing a reciprocal relationship between teacher and student, fostering mutual acceptance and respect to create a humanized learning atmosphere. Dr. Carangio teaches Management courses at AUR.

Biography

Professor del Papa has extensive experience in the corporate world working in the Business Development Department at the Pharmaceutical Multinational company Merck Sharp and Dohme and as Director of External Relations & Marketing at American West. Since 2002, she has served as a Senior Attorney at a prestigious law firm in Rome, and has also been legal advisor to Italian congressmen - principally drafting laws in the entertainment sector.

At AUR, Professor Dessì teaches courses such as International Organizations (IOs), Terrorism and Political Violence, Democracy, Populism and Authoritarianism, and the Model UN Special Course, amongst others.

Before joining AUR, Professor Dessì worked for over a decade in the policy research world at Italy’s leading think tank, the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), where he remains an Associated Fellow. Based in Rome, Professor Dessì directed the Institute’s Italian Foreign Policy program and the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Africa research program, overseeing research projects, consultancy tasks, and media outreach on behalf of the Institute. During this time, Professor Dessì founded IAI’s English-language op-ed series, the IAI Commentaries, which he oversaw as Scientific Director (2017-2022) and has contributed to several EU-funded projects and research tasks (FP7 & H2020), cooperating with the Italian Foreign Ministry, EU institutions, and the private sector in Italy and abroad.

Since joining IAI in 2011, Professor Dessì has worked extensively on US and EU foreign policy towards the Middle East, focusing on the diplomatic and military history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, US policy towards Israel, and Washington’s alliance frameworks in the Middle East. His research interests include global politics and security studies, the geopolitics of the Middle East, and the intersection between global and regional trends and developments, including in the energy sector and the impact of climate change. Andrea holds a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) with a thesis on the US-Israel relationship during the 1980s and has published in a variety of academic and policy journals and media outlets as well as participating in innumerable international conferences and gatherings in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the United States.
